Blog Post 10

I'm a papermate, and I'm a Ticonderoga I think is expressing how the more money you spend on something usually means you are getting a better quality. They are referring to buying Mac's over PC's. Yes MAC's are more expensive and that is maybe why students think that they are a better deal because they "last longer." I have a PC and it has been going strong for 4 years when many of my friends have had MAC's and hate them for some reason or they quit on them. It's a judgment call up to any and every person that is going to be buying a computer, but I do agree that most of the time when you buy the more expensive item it usually pays off.

John Spence

John Spence is a teacher that actually likes to make the kids have fun while learning. Which I think is key when teaching young children. It is hard for younger students to sit there for more than 10 minutes without moving let alone catch what the teacher is saying so I think that Mr. Spence is doing a great thing buy involving games in his teaching! I would do the same thing, however his principle does not tolerate it! I also like that Mr. Spence stands up for himself and his teaching style because he basically acts like it is going to be another game to keep teaching the children they way he does without the principle finding out!
I also read Mr. Spence's blog Capturing Reality! I thought it was great because it does always seem that everyone these days are so worried about capturing the moment rather than being in the moment. I have to agree that I am the same way but that is because my memory is not very good and I like to be able to reminisce about my past years down the road.

Scott McLeod

I liked Mr. McLeod's post and I do agree with him just not 100%. I think that internet, and everything should be monitored, definitely at school but I do think however that the students should be exposed to it. I think that when you try to protect someone to much is when the rebel and try to find the bad. If you show your child/student everything is out there and build a trust with them you will not have a problem with have to block them from cites or any of those sorts of things.

Mrs. McClung

On May 27th 2009 Mr. McClung talks about what he learned his first year of teaching. He first taught in Noel Missiouri. I think that he had a lot of great pointers and things that he learned his first year. I'm sure his first year out on his own (teaching wise) not following anybody and doing all the work 100% on his own was difficult. But I think that is is very good that Mr. McClung is able to point out the things that maybe didn't go 100% as he wished or he found a new outlook on some aspect of teaching. Teaching will always be lessons learned to the teacher as well.

The things that Mr. McClung learned his first year of teaching was:

How to read a crowd
-You have to know your audience to know what and how to teach the material.
Be Flexible
-This is one thing that I have already preached about in many other classes. Mainly on a technology level, because many times before I have had teachers cancel class because the internet was down and they did not have a "Plan B" That goes for anything I think you should always have a Plan B
Communicate
- I think Communication is key in any situation but definitely in the work place. You definitely do not want any confrontation when there are children involved because they play off of your emotions and plus it would not make work fun.
Be Reasonable
-I think he says it best. "As teachers we hold very high expectations for our students....sometimes they live up to those expectations, and sometimes they don't. Often we build our expectations too high for students, and become upset when they do not meet the expectation"
Don't be afraid of Technology
-I think that is what Mr. Strange is trying to teach us now. But yes you have to always be one step ahead of the students which means technology is going to be very important
Listen to your students
-Your students is your classroom so you have to take what they say into consideration. Not only listening to them for help with an assignment but you need to be their friend, and that is often what small children look for in adults.
Never stop Learning
-As I said before teaching will always be a lesson learned for the teacher.

You can tell that Mr. McClung has learned a lot from teaching because four short years later he does not have as much to say of what he has learned. That does not mean he has stopped learning as he advises not to do, but simply he is on another level and is learning different things.

The two main things he says on June 13 2012 that he has learned from the previous year are:

You gotta dance with who you came to the dance with
-He means you have to remember your peers, and
Challenge Yourself
-I think challenging yourself is kind of like never stop learning. If you know "all" then you are not challenging yourself and therefor not learning.

Richard Miller

Mr. Miller says that writing can be done in a creative way. And how there will be all different ways to to get information out there for people to see, and we have to be able to teach out students how to use these. Just as now-a-days anybody can make and edit a video, there is not really any need for a videographer, music producer or photographer. It seems like anyone can these days. I do not think what Mr. Miller is talking about would apply to elementary students but maybe for middle and high schoolers, definitely!

Carly Pugh

Carly I think feels the same way that Mr. Miller does about multimedia technology. I think that she did a good job on her post and I liked the video she added at the end. I think that it is pretty neat to make the playlist and video together to show different things about you and your teaching philosophies and you can then put them into a portfolio, but I probably would not put it into a video for an employer on the internet.

Chipper series and EDM for Dummies

Not sure what I am suppose to say about the Chipper video. I believe the point is to prove school is here to better us and the teachers are not her to teach you so you do not have to learn but to teach you how to teach yourself and to learn the importance of each subject. The EDM for dummies was funny and dramatic but so are all the "Dummie" books. If you just take some time and explore all these different social networks or new technology devices  anybody can figure it out.
Dummies

Learn to Change. Change to Learn

This world is always changing and technology is one of the main things that is changing and teachers need to be prepaid to teach and help their students with it. I think that teachers are relying to much on technology these days though. In my high school and even in college I have seen class canceled or the students told to do whatever they want because the teacher had only planned on a video or some sort of technology based project to take place and then either the internet went done or for some other random reason it didn't work. Teachers don't seem to be doing as much anymore. I do believe that this will keep happening and this technology trend will only progress so the only thing we can do about it is move on and keep on teaching it.

Kaechele had made a new blog because he was not sure were he was going with his old blog. His new blog is called "In the Trenches"  but he hadn't really started his new blog.

Then on his other blog "Concrete Classroom" he writes about 1929's stock Market Crash and makes a simulator.

His blog was very confusing and I believe I had commented on both blogs but my computer also messed up so I am not even sure if the comment did submit!?

Confused; Where to go...?!

PLN Progress Report

I'm not real sure on my PLN but I do know that I do not plan on using Twitter, Blogger or any of these things if I do become a teacher. I will use my fellow colleagues  the school principle, family members, and my old teachers that I keep in contact with if I were to ever need help with anything. As for certain technology programs to actually use in the class room I cant really say right now because I'm sure there will be a new hot thing when I start to teach and it is always changing.

PJ

PJ is a 5 year student at Pt England School in Auckland, NZ and is in Mrs. Lavakula's class.
On February 14th PJ posted a video that he had made on his iPad. It was titled "All About Me" Even though it was only 7 slides I learned a lot about him. He is Somoan, likes Spiderman and Chris Brown and either really likes his teacher or just trying to get some brownie points because he threw in she is cool! : )

Brandon

Brandon is in Ms. Vannoy's first grade class and on January 3rd 2013 Brandon expressed how much he loves Christmas because he got a lot of cars. I wish I got some cars..well a real car for Christmas. I did tell him that I did get some cool stuff for Christmas though.

They seem like pretty cool kids but I never really know what I am suppose to write on a 6 year old's blog post that is one sentence long!!??

Blog Post 7

Randy Pausch

Pausch says how you need to have specific dreams! I agree because dreams are the same as goals and I think they are very important to have because it keeps you headed in the right direction. And for dreams they will always be there and they can always grow into something bigger and better. I like when Mr. Pausch says that you do not have to be the smartest to lead. Most leaders are never the smartest, to be able to be a good leader you have to know when you are wrong and just be able to work together and get everyone to work together to find the right answer/solution. If the leader is always right it makes it hard for anyone to follow I think. Pausch mentions how in a lot of his dreams he would hit "brick walls" I think that those brick was are there for a reason. To test ones dedication and strength. If you are always handed everything and not having to work for it or fight through something, how is that rewarding?!

Some of Randy Pausch's techniques were to help others and have loyalty along with having child like wonders with a never giving up attitude. I think these are all great ideas. And I would want to practice all of them in my classroom as well.

I loved all of Mr. Pausch's teaching methods. Being good at something instead of everything. If you try to be good at everything will can't really excel at one thing, and quit frankly I just think that it would get to be to much. He also says to work hard, and to always be prepared. He then says to find the good in everybody. Everybody has some good, some may have lot and some you may have to look for. But you should always try to find the good in everybody!

The network student

I think that is is pretty good and cool to be able to contact whoever you want to get help for random things via the web, but can you trust it?! I'd probably say not very often. Id say it is probably more just used for inspiration and some class room ideas but not so much for assignments.

They ask why they even need a network teacher?! They say it is because they need someone to TEACH them how to build this network and how to take advantage of these opportunities. Then the other things the teacher would be there for would be guidance,  how to communicate and to ask for help, how to pick out good information instead of false or bad and then to turn web search into a scavenger hunt. And then she is there to help put together all the information.

I think I will be able to be a networked teacher in the sense that I can help the children utilize the web and new technology classes. But as for me using it with blogging or anything that probably wont happen. If I need help or inspiration for anything I hope to be able to go to my fellow colleagues or the principle. I also have almost all of my teachers that I had in school that I still talk to and converse about new teaching ideas, along with many family members that are teachers.

Blog Post 5

If you built a school.

Mrs. Krissy is a 10 year educator. After years of teaching elementary she is now in her passion of special education. I think that she is a very gifted person and very very creative and brings that to her classroom. You can tell she is so creative and spontaneous by her "If you built a school" blog on November 13, 2012. She describes her school, and there is literally not a dull moment or a single white wall in the entire school. She encourages self creativity and student collaboration.  I love when Krissy says that a grade level should not depend on an age but on readiness and ability. Smarts and schooling should not be based on your age but on your readiness, because I know many people that are smarter than an older brother or sister but they are not advanced to another grade because of their age. So in a way we are holding back children and not letting them be the best they can be because we are trying to make everyone average.

Eric Whitcare

I think that Eric's choir class was neat but again I think that it is taking away from human interaction and it is making all those children lazy. Sit at home in your bed and sing a song then send me the video, I do not think that was very good teaching and again making the children lazy. We already have a problem with this in America so we are just making it worst with this kind of teaching. <---that was my initial reaction
After I watched the NPR interview I did change my point of view a little bit. I think it is cool that they have the people from all over the world. However...is this an elective, an after school program, or something just for fun. If it is just for fun sure go for it, it could be a good time, but if it is for school education I do not know how that would work. If you have one person at one school that wants to be apart of this how will they be able to get the times right with the other children all over the world and how will they be able to pay a teacher to sit in a class with one student? I know this kind of thing would of never happened at my small school because we didn't even have enough money to have some extra elective class.
I guess I am split down the middle on this Digital Choir thing.

Kevin Roberts

I think that Mr. Roberts thinks that teaching int he 21st century is not much different. Is stead of teaching children how to use paper and pencils and how to manage it int he classroom we now have to exchange that for iPads and iPhones. Children can almost literally find anything they want to at their finger tips and since they can, teachers are here just to filter it and to help put it in to real life situations and how to use it collaboratively and educationally. It will change education in they way that now teacher MUST know how to use technology because it will be everywhere. As a teacher you always want to have an answer for your student that comes to you and even if you are not using technology in your classroom I'm sure that they will have a question about it that they will expect you to answer.

Flipping the classroom

I think that Katie Gimbar flipping the classroom was a pretty good idea. She set up the flipping of the classroom in order to get bring all of the children together. In the classroom you will always have a couple kids that are ahead of the assignment and bored with the teaching, the ones that are behind because the teacher before just passed them along with out actually knowing the information and the children that are focused and need all the teachers help to get the present material. Mrs. Gimbar's flip makes it to where the kids that are behind can look at the assignment that will be in next class and go ahead and do some practice work and get caught up. And for the kids that are ahead it gives them more material to practice on.

Steven Wheeler

Steven's post on January 21st 2013 was about "Telling your story." He and some of his colleagues with their students saw the need of a closer well to a village in Gambia so the children would not have to walk as far for water and so they would be able to go to school instead of working. So together they raised some money for that to happen. He also shows how you can put images on blogger instead of just text. He showed a couple really good pictures that he took in Gambia of some of the people. I love taking and looking at pictures because you can capture so much more in one photo than you can in a paragraph of text. I think that was what he was trying to do as well.
I commented on his photography skills and that I thought raising the money for a new well was great and how there needs to be more people like him out there to help other people and countries.

On February 9th 2013 Mr. Wheeler blogs "Being Negroponte" Negroponte is an author of a book Mr. Wheeler wrote that he says "changed his view of the world" Negroponte in the early 90's talking about what the world will be "...when newspapers, movies, music, television, photography, and a host of other media would reside exclusively within the digital domain."
Mr. Wheeler then got to meet Nic Negroponte for dinner at a learning technologies conference. He got to hear about his life and all his plans such as, 1 Laptop Per Child (1LPC). They have gave out over 2.5 million laptops to 40 different countries

Negroponte's ideas and 1LCP are great ideas and I think that it is cool that Mr. Wheeler got very inspired by this guy when he read his book in the early 90's. Mr. Wheeler seems like he would be a pretty cool dude and is a good mentor/ teacher to many.

Blog Post #3

Technology in Special Education

I think that technology can be good, definitely for special education. It helps the teacher and the students get things done faster and more efficient. When I was a student aide in high school for a special education class they first came out with a small device that the student could use to write things out and it would say it back to her and then she could tell the teacher. It was really neat and you could tell the student liked it and it made communication easier because she could barely talk. Technology has came a long way since then however.

I think that it would be easier to keep special needs children active and excited about learning with technology unlike other middle or high school students that would take advantage of having a personal computer all day. Some ways that I would use technology in the classroom for special education would be power points that had a lot of fun colors and activities. Get different educational games for them to play, if they get finished early. I also like that the one child had the iPod touch to help him read his book. We had the same things as kids they were just other types of voice recorders such as walkmen. Now they have it where you can download whatever book and probably in whatever language right to your phone of iPod.

Apps for Special Education

I think that is it cool that there are so many apps out there generally for any and everything but I think that any of that learning could of been down with out an iPad. Without the ipad the parents would have more interaction with the child. The game that the child was playing where he hit the icon and it would count for him, yes its still teaching him but he also might just be repeating what the computer says and not actually retaining it. It the dad were to point to an object and have the child say it, it does the say justice, if not more and gives them more bonding time together to learn. I suppose it's good for students to know what kind of technology is out there but what happens when they can't take the ipad, ipod, laptop or smartboard home and the parents don't have money to purchase one then what?! Having been around special needs children if you give them something like this on a daily basis and then take it away (when they go home) most will get very aggravated trying to communicate and maybe even regress. I think everybody it relying to much on technology!

If I did have iPad's in my special needs classroom however I would let them play whatever educational game they chose.

Vicki Davis

I liked when Vicki said "I do not have to know everything to teach." I agree its good for the students to learn some stuff on their own and to help out other classmates. It builds teamwork and makes for a better classroom environment I think. However since I am going into Elementary Education and not Secondary or Higher I sure hope I do know everything a child ask me on work or assignments. I did not agree with Mrs. Vicki though on that fact that she said "Students can't just learn with pencil and paper." Yes all children are different but pencil and paper is not stopping a child from learning. I want to bet when Mrs. Vicki was in school she used pencil and paper and rarely was on a computer and now look she is an educator and I guessing doing an okay job if she is still teaching so I believe that is false and hypocritical. We have had many, many genius people in our history come from not using any technology at all.

Blog Post #2

Did You Know?!...

I must say I did not know all those crazy pointless facts in the "Did You Know? 3.0 - A John Strange 2012 Version" Stuff like the numbers of videos uploaded to Youtube daily and the fact that 93% of 8-18 years old had a computer in the home. I do believe the statistic is true but I'm sure that number does not mean 93% of 8-18 year old's are sitting at home on the computer or that the computer has internet even. My house was one of those statistics but I can not remember one time from the age 8-16 being on the computer at home. So what is this statistic even proving?! That technology is growing?! Well so is education, science, and mankind so I'd suppose that's a good thing.
I know how to use technology very well, and it may be everywhere but I do not think I have to know everything about technology to be a great Educator. I also do not think technology HAS to be used in the classroom. I'm sure I will use technology in my classroom but not excessively and not mandatory. I believe in personal interaction and problem solving over e-mailing or using Google to find answers.

Mr. Winkle Wakes

I agree with Mr. Winkle that technology has grown so much in the last 100 years, but I do not think that my schooling was "boring" or I did not learn as much due to not having technology. I remember looking up research papers and just general information via dictionaries, encyclopedias and books, I also remember not getting internet at my house until I was a freshman in high school. I think having internet and having students do research papers via the web provides more room for plagiarism. There are sites that can prevent that such as Turnitin.com but I just think that back when you were suppose to read actual books for the information, they did.
The classroom has changed a lot, but unless I am teaching a computer class I do not plan on having each child have a personal computer, Ipod, Ipad or any of those things. It is good for them to know how to use them yes, but that can be up to their parents and life outside of school. I guess you could say I am old fashion but we all have our own ways of learning which would then make us have our own ways or teaching.

Sir Ken Robinson: The Importance of Creativity

I think that Sir Ken Robinson has some very good points. I do agree that we are born with creativity it is just up to us to keep it to adult hood. And I also think that schools are taking away from children's creativity. If a child is not doing what you (the teacher, or administration) wants then it is "wrong" or need to be fixed as if something is wrong. His definition of creativity is great "process of having original ideas that have value."  I also love when Mr. Robinson fights for dance in schooling. I strongly agree I think that dance is a good form of art and I think it school be offered an an elective just as art and music are. Also how he talked about the little girl that he mother thought something was wrong with her because she could not sit still to learn. I am the same way and that is also probably why I am a dancer. I learn better by being up and being active and there is nothing wrong with that, and I hate that people think that there is and the immediate reaction is to take them to the doctor and get them on medication. This is why children's creativity is dying!! Intelligence is 3 things diverse, dynamic, and distinct as Robinson says and I agree they are all good points.  Very good speaker and I love how he uses humor to keep the audience alive and I think puts things in prospective for them.

A Day Made of Glass

The Glass technology was pretty cool I'd have to say but I see technology fail daily. I would not trust that technology at a doctor's surgery table if it glitches in the middle of that who know what would happen. I would also not depend on it for my classroom. If it was available to me in my class room I would use it for certain projects but not an everyday thing because you would have to have a back up for if a server goes down or anything like that, which happen quit often.

Blog Post #1

About Me:

My name is Bailey Baker, I was born and raised in a small town in Kansas with a graduating class of 32, so I gladly left last July to venture down to Mobile. After graduating high school I attended Butler Community College in Kansas and earned my Associates Degree in Liberal Arts and then decided Kansas was not where I wanted to end up teaching. So even though I will now being going to school for 2 more years than expected and be adding a couple more zeros to my school debit, in the end I am very glad I did the move and now attending USA! My passions are dancing and teaching/ helping others. In high school I was the VP of our business team and the team captain of the dance team so I would say I was good at being a leader and have yet to change that. I am the youngest of 5 and even though people may think that the baby is always the spoiled one, that is absolutely not the case here! Lets just say my parents have taught me you have to fight in what you want, believe in, and what you deserve and that's the only way you will get it, nothing will ever be handed to you, and if it is it is not worth it!

When I first went to college I was a business major with the plan to own my own dance studio and after a semester of accounting I changed back to Education, but hey who does not change their major at least once. I do however, hope that later in life I will be able to go back to school and still get my business degree. I know however that teaching is my destiny. I found a worksheet my mom kept from when I was in Kindergarten that asked " What do you want to be when you grow up?" my answer "A Teacher, just like you (talking about my Kindergarten teacher)." That never changed in tell my senior year in high school when I joined the business team. So I am still a little stuck between Teaching and Management. I think full force that it was all the great teachers I had and all the fun things I can remember doing as a child of why I want to teacher. That and the fact that I have seen so much failure in public school systems due to the "No Child Left Behind Act" and "10 Year" for teachers. I do not like these acts and policies. I think that there were intended to be good and were but then failed over time. I'm not saying it's like this everywhere, but everywhere I have seen the child that doesn't quite get the material gets pushed along due to "No Child Left Behind." Then once a teacher is in 10 you can almost guarantee their care and participation goes down, due to the fact that they can almost do anything and get away with it. I have even had teachers in all age levels Elementary, High and College say "Well I don't care I'm 10 year." I do hope that one day I will be able to change these policies and better Education.

As a teacher I will have the same mine set that I got from me parents, that nothing will be handed to me. I plan on being a guide for young children. Of course teaching them the essentials about school but also life. I will never hand my children (students) anything. They will set goals and I will do whatever I can to help them reach those goals. I plan to be an authoritarian friend to all of my students and wish to be one of the teachers that is revisited by her students years down the road. Just as I did to almost all of my Elementary teachers up until I did the big move down to Alabama.

Some of the things that I plan to do in my classroom is to keep in calm but chaotic at the same time. Organized chaos is good for children I think, and with 20+ young children in one room to yourself, it is hard to keep a fully structured calm room. So if you make it a fun learning environment the children are more open to participating. On an Elementary level I plan to assign responsibilities to everyone each week. This will teach everybody responsibility, participation, teamwork and it will also take stress off of my self and probably many children too. I also plan to use all 7 learning techniques, linguistic, logical, spatial, musical, bodily, interpersonal, and intrapersonal. Everyone learns in a different way so I think it is very important to know all these different learning styles and to test the children to see where they are at the beginning of the year.

A few other things I plan to do is to keep all work caught up for the children and for my self. Never  get behind and always be positive. Children will always play off of your mood so you can never be in a bad mood and if you are you can not show it because they depend on you! I also hope to have many parent teacher conferences. If the children need it, if the parent needs it or just to get to know the family and background of my students.

RANDY PAUSCH;

I do agree with Mister Pausch that American's waste a lot of time just in general. I know I waste a lot of time trying to figure out what I should be doing. That is why I started to make "to-do lists." I seem to get upset though when I do not get things finished on the list so I am trying to learn to have a relaxed list of things to do in the near future not necessarily have a certain time it needs to be finished. Unless of course it is homework for class.
I loved his saying "..Doing things right, when we should be Doing the right thing."
